Artist Statement
My work seeks to draw on the feelings of unease that occur throughout mental growth by presenting subject matter that borders on surreal and dark in an effort to create emotional discord. In contrast, these concepts are delivered through visual cues intended to place the audience at ease.
Materials and textures that convey a sense of softness are sought out, as well as muted color palettes that evoke tranquility. Natural pale woods, matte ceramics, cast gypsum cement, and fibers/textiles are predominantly used. The craftsmanship of the work is kept clean and minimal to satisfy a natural desire for order within us. The harmonic geometry of our natural world, such as the golden ratio and other forms of sacred geometry guide the proportions and design. Lighting and cast shadows both extend the conceptual and give rise to primal feelings within our early collective unconsciousness as a species.
The psychological relationship we have between ourselves and object/ environment is explored through the concept of space as a visual womb— a place where the audience can feel engulfed by the space/object, but yet completely relaxed, allowing for the exploration of more pensive subject matter.
Inspiration is predominantly drawn from our natural world, not just tactile but spirituality that exists as the connection to the reoccurring patterns within our universe. Dominant themes include duality, mathematical harmony, and the social constructs of gender.
